So my laptop recently (about a week ago) started making fairly constant internal uhhhhh, sparking? noises. On a scale of bad signs, where's that at?

The machine is about 4.5 years old.

umm...after a laptop is 4 years old, i'd say it's just time to get a new computer.

You should consult David Copperfield if you want a magic trick. If not, post more info imo (brand name, sound of the noise, your last fMRI scanning, etc.)

It's a Toshiba, one of their Satellite series (M45)

It's a rapid buzzing; it quite frankly does sound like sparks are jumping around inside, above/under the left side of the keyboard. The noise is constant through startup, and whenever anything more taxing processing-wise than web browsing is going on. It doesn't seem to make the sound at all after about 20-30 minutes of running.
